Bathroom Blood!

A reflection on some personal experience (part 7)

bathblood-

I was working as a psychiatric student nurse in the locked men's ward.
It was morning, all patients were up (potties emptied) and now it was
bath time! The bathroom had one bath in the middle of the room, 4 open
shower recesses (no doors or curtains here) against one wall and a few
sinks along another side. There was always a lot of activity - some
men were supervised while shaving and others while washing. The room
was full of naked and half naked men all in reasonably close contact
with each other and with staff. I had been warned about Billy who was
a seriously overweight mentally handicapped schizophrenic with frequent
aggressive outbursts. Read the rest of this entry

The Paint Job

A reflection on some personal experience (part 6)

mop3web-

It was coming to the close of an evening shift in the locked men's ward
at WPH. All the residents were well medicated, most with large
quantities of chlorpromazine syrup, and the ward was quiet. The actual
dose that many patients received did not bear any resemblance to the
dose they were in fact prescribed - but that's another story! Anyway, I
was finishing off my late evening duties of sweeping and mopping (all
this part of my mental health nursing training) and had bagged up the
rubbish to take outside to the large dustbin. Read the rest of this

In Brisbane, the Royal National Show is held every August (more
commonly called the "Ekka"). At WPH this was a time when some of the
residents could have a pleasant outing for the day under the
supervision of accompanying staff. Read the rest of this entry

(It's all about) "Shaving Face!"

A reflection on some personal experience (part 4)

shavebrush- It was in an open men's ward at the Institution
where you could be misled into thinking the provision of care was at
least of a reasonable standard. The ward was full of middle aged and
older men - some with residual schizophrenia, some with Alzheimer's and
a handful with an intellectually disability.

The routine had similarities with other wards at WPH, and here I
frequently found myself as the yardman. The yard fence was not high,
but these guys were not going anywhere so any absconding risk was low.

Going Potty!

mad2- A reflection on some personal experience (part 3)

The men's locked ward at WPH consisted of a large inside dormitory and
about 12 single inside rooms. There were also a further 10 single
rooms that, while physically attached to the main building, opened into
the fenced yard area on the outside. All the single rooms had heavy
wooden and metal shutters that were locked over the windows from late
afternoon until morning. There was a narrow piece of vertical perspex
in the door for viewing. All single room residents were locked in their
rooms overnight. Read the rest of this entry

Institution sacrificed dignity!

A reflection on some personal experience (part 2)

Once again back in the late 70s in the Psychiatric Hospital
(institution) where I trained (see article below also) there was a
men's ward with appoximately 50 residents. Pretty much everyone
suffered from a chronic mental illness and the remainder from
dementia. In addition there were about 20 who had a physical
disability as well and had compromised mobility.

It is this smaller group of 20 that really suffered. Read the rest of this

Mental health in the "dark" ages

Wolston_Park_Hospital3-

A reflection on some personal experience (part 1)

When I say "dark" ages I guess I refer to my own experience of the dark
side of mental health. For me this was in the late 1970's. I was
training as a "mental" nurse at this time, after already having
completed my General Nursing training at the Royal Brisbane Hospital.

I, and a handful of other students, were commonly referred to as GTs
(General Trained). Now this was not a term of endearment - it really
meant - a troublemaker; an upstart; or someone to be careful of. Read

Find other ZORGIUM pages using AZ.COM:

Enter your search keyword(s) into the search input field of http://az.com
The zorgium specific results appear in the right hand margin.

Find other ZORGIUM pages using your favorite search engine:

Enter your search keyword(s) and the keyword "zorgium" into the search input field of http://bing.com, http://yahoo.com or http://google.com.

Heads up: There's an ongoing spamdexing of Google searchbot algorithms. Sites that are 'copies of copies' and cloaked sites which include Zorgium keywords presented to search engine crawlers yet garbage content presented to human visitors were hosted on thousands of IP addresses and domains registered immediately after the introduction of Zorgium in November of 2009. The Hostgator/'The Planet'/Softlayer datacenters in Texas seem to be the epicenter of this activity in conjunction with anonymously registered domains of various TLD's but primarily .info domains at Godaddy which, in our opinion, has some sort of connection to the domains of goldmint.in and goldmint.org. Google has begun to notice this and has begun to lower the ranking of these sites and put our original sites back on top of the search rankings. These actions, as far as we can tell, negatively impact the use of the keyword 'zorgium' as a search term and provided little benefit, if any, to the perpetrators.

ZORGIUM note to content providers: If you don't want your page to appear in Zorgium's search abstraction then put an exclusion for "Zorgium" in your web server's robots.txt file.
